Re:ªÅx¨ì©³¦³µL¥Î¹LF-104C ?

The following list (not complete) is my impression of ROCAF major combat role jets for about the past 50 years (to present):

1)F-84 Thunderjets (urgent replacementfor ROCAFs propeller fighters
--to challenge the MiG- 15/17s across the strait)
2)F-86 Sabres (had downed MiG-17s during the 1954-1958 Taiwan Strait Crisis)
3)F-100 Super Sabres (replaced the Sabres role as air superiority & fighter-bomber) -- this should be the ROCAFs first supersonic jet.
4)RF-101 (reconnaisance) Voodoos -- hot item introduced near the end of the Strait Crisis.
5)F-102 (Not sure if the USAF flown Delta Dart had ever been deployed to the ROC during the Strait Crisis) ? I know the USAF had, among other types, dispatched F-104s to Taiwan around that time. If it did flown over Taiwan, could this be the type mistaken later for the CF-105 Avro Arrow (from Canada) ?
6)F-104 Starfighters -- the type seemed to have served the longest in the ROCAFs first line fighters --finally retiring around 1998. Also started serving in the ROCAF near the end of the Strait Crisis. During service, often regarded as ROCAFs top interceptor --despite many sad stories associated with the type.
7)RF-84F Thunderflashes -- a faithful but less well talked about type; different from the Thunderjets (with lateral air intakes VS ventral intakes)
[some reported lost over China?]
8)RB-45s (not sure about the NATO codename) -- I think the ROCAF operated a handful of these bomber converted reconnaisance machines --also less covered due to their (understandably) special role [some reported lost over China?]
9)F-5 Freedom Fighters (Lil Tigers) -- a welcome addition to ROCAFs well stocked & rather exotic inventory in the 1960s (first started operating around 1965? -- A & B types)
10)F-5E/F Tiger IIs (alias ChungChings in the ROCAF) -- designed by Northrop to be a MiG-21 Fishbed killer (ROCAFs air superiority fighter & standard fighter-bomber from the late 1970s)
11)U-2s (highly secretive high altitude planes. Had flown many missions for the ROCAF & manned by ROC pilots. [quite a few were downed over China]
12)ChingKuo IDF F-CK-1s
13)F-16 Fighting Falcons (Phoenix jets for the ROCAF)
14)Mirage 2000-5s (first European made jets to serve in the ROCAF).

Well, I probably may miss some. But the above sure appear to be a colorful list
of planes that bring back good (and some sad &sour;) memories of the ROCAF -- and more importantly, my gratitudes & respect for the men (and women) who had flown & served the Republic of China Air Force for the past 50 some years !!!
It sure wasnt easy & nothing should be taken for granted. ALL THE BEST TO THE ROCAF !

Re:ªÅx¨ì©³¦³µL¥Î¹LF-104C ?

To Mr.Passer-By: Greetings from Toronto, Canada ! How are you ?

[1] Thank you for pointing out my mistake -- Yes, I really meant the RB-57
(alias British Canberra jet bomber produced also in the USA --still used by countries like India in some capacity)

[2] Yes, Im also not sure whether the F-102s had ever been deployed in Taiwan
by USAF forces. I know the ROCAF never had operated F-102s. Its also just an after thought based on someones (unconfirmed)claim of possibly sighting the Canadian CF-105 Avro Arrow in Taiwan.

Regards & Thanks again for your sharing & input !

Re:ªÅx¨ì©³¦³µL¥Î¹LF-104C ?

Hello.
To: Mr.SK2
Thanks for looking up the Nato code name [Tornado] for RB-45
reconnaisance-configured jet bomber. It was my mistake, this type never
served in the ROCAF. It was the RB-57 [Canberra] that I was thinking about.

According to a report in the website Silent Warriors
(http://www.silent-warriors.com/shootdown_list.html) --
Feb 1958 An RB-57D operated by the RoCAF was shot down over mainland China.

I think the Air Force operated a small quantity of RB-57s (some source suggested 2 RB-57Ds) -- transferred from USAF stock --during the Taiwan Strait Crisis.

To: Mr. Passer-By
Youre right about the F-102. I understand that of the list of countries you mentioned --S.Korea, S.Vietnam (formerly), etc.. only Turkeys air force later took the F-102 & operated the type in their air force inventory.

Take care, folks & TTYL.

To Mr. SnowWind Yukikaze:

Thanks for the info. !
BTW, would you know if the (official/govt?) magazine entitled Chinese Air Force is still being published ? [please refer to remark by Mr. Shi @ No:579_4 above]. I live in Canada, and back in the 1970s (around 1977-78?) I had subscribed to that magazine. Would really appreciate if you -- or someone in at the forum living in Taiwan ROC --can give me some info. on it (i.e. if its still being published) --e.g. website, if available. I do recall it had many fabulous photos on ROCAF aircraft --e.g. F-100s, F-104s & F-5s (the first line types during that time). The Chinese Air Force magazines old subscription address I recall was ...somewhere along Yen Ai road (TaiChung?).

To Mr. SnowWind Yukikaze (from land of the maple leaves):

Thank you so much for the 2 websites. Ive checked em out already.
Still hope to see if I can get a website for the Chinese Air Force magazine.
May consider an eventual renewal subscription.

Yes, I understand were tired of politics -- especially types that may lower the morale or fighting power of the forces. But that seems to be something that we need to constantly struggle with & hopefully overcome eventually.
Im kind of excited about the Tiger 2000 flight recently (http://www.taipeitimes.com/news/2002/07/30/story/0000158279) --although for whatever reason the air force doesnt appear to carry the same enthusiasm (budget maybe?)

Anyway. Take care. Hope to TTYL. Glad to have known another air (ROCAF) enthusiast !!!
