When doing aerobatics in RC flight, you can
make a quick turn without touching rudder.
I have the experience the rudder turn is for
slow cruising, not for quick motions. Some
powered plane even gives you the option of
no rudder servo.

But it is only RC experience.

Lots of other good posts on this that make sense, but I thought Id toss
in the way it was taught to me, in case that helps.

Rudder is the oddball in that it isnt used to create yaw, but is used to
stop unwanted (adverse) yaw. This unwanted yaw can show up at various
times and it sometimes depends upon what your doing as to whether the yaw
is unwanted or not.

A couple of examples:
- When rolling into a turn the ailerons generate yaw in the direction
opposite to the direction of the turn. The more modern trainers, such
as a C172 dont do this much, so it is hard to see. (You need to get
in an old crate to really see this in action.) As such, a little rudder
in the direction of roll as you roll in and out of turns will compensate
for this adverse yaw.

- When doing a maneuver called a slip, the airplane wants to yaw in the
direction it is banked after youve rolled into the turn (ie. make the
turn). For a slip, you dont want this, so the rudder is used to keep
the airplane from yawing.

- The prop on a single engine airplane introduces yaw via 4 different
mechanisms and you normally dont want this yaw, so the rudder is used
to stop it.

Anyhow, unless you are doing aerobatics, the rudder is used to stop unwanted
yaw, instead of making the airplane yaw when you want it to. (At least this
is how it was explained to me and it seems to make sense.)

Rudder and aileron are used together in all turn entries and exits. The
trick is finding the exact amount of each required to produce the exact rate
of turn for the angle of bank you have chosen.The best way to do that is
WATCH THE NOSE, not the ball! Either the ball or the nose will tell you
instantly if the inputs are correct. The difference is that by watching the
nose, your head is outside the cockpit where it should be instead of staring
at the ball. Make no mistake; the nose will tell you instantly whether the
inputs are right. The nose is nothing but a huge ball, just sitting there in
your field of vision waiting to be used to tell you about the quality of
your rudder use!
Now this next part is important, so listen up!! :-)
Even though you can consider a turn entry and exit to be a blending of
correct aileron for rudder as well as the opposite way around, make it
simple for yourself and concentrate only on the rudder end of this delicate
equation. In other words, accept whatever aileron you are using and attempt
to marry the right amount of inside rudder to that aileron. Now youre only
dealing with the inside rudder, and the amount of rudder you are looking for
will vary as a function of whatever aileron you have chosen to
apply.....heavy aileron....more rudder needed......light aileron.....lighter
rudder. What youre looking for is an EXACT PIN of the nose as the turn is
entered and exited. Too much inside rudder will slew the nose inside the
turn and too little will slew the nose to the outside of the turn. ANY
lateral movement of the nose except staying EXACTLY pinned is unacceptable.
If the nose tells you youre skidding, correct it by using less inside
rudder. If the nose tells you youre slipping, use a bit more inside rudder.
If you notice here, were dealing only with INSIDE RUDDER!! Releasing too
much inside rudder will do the same thing in correcting a skidding entry to
a turn as applying outside rudder to correct it. The difference is that its
a smoother correction and keeps you dealing with only the inside part of the
problem. If youre using too much inside rudder or not enough, you correct
accordingly. The answer to correct rudder use in turn entries and exits is
simple; PIN THE NOSE!! You practice this a few times and get it right, and
you probably wont ever look at the ball again! :-))))
With about an hours practice trying to pin the nose visually while varying
amounts of aileron and inside rudder to enter and exit from turns, you
should be able to do this automatically.
One thing!!! Dont forget to apply back pressure for the turn, and bleed
that back pressure off during the exit! :-))))

ALL maneuvering, whether it be in a small aircraft or a fighter, is done by
a constant blending of ALL controls. Rudder is used in entering and exiting
a turn as stated in the remarks you have quoted. Although it is possible to
enter a turn without rudder just using aileron, waiting for the adverse yaw
to dampen out, then applying back pressure to increase angle of attack
enough to make up for the lift lost to bank, its not good flying to do
things this way. Actually, you can enter a turn using rudder only, which
causes yaw, which in turn will eventually cause bank, but this is also a bad
way to do things. The correct way is to use both aileron for bank, and
rudder to correct yaw at the same time both entering and exiting the turn.
This insures coordination, and keeps everything in balance aerodynamically.
Once the bank has been established where you want it, the rudder is
released, the aileron neutralized, and the turn held with back pressure.
Its a little more complicated than this actually, as shallow banks have a
tendency to return the airplane to level flight and require a slight amount
of aileron held in the turn, and steep banks require some outside aileron to
compensate for overbanking tendency. Medium banks can be flown basically the
way I have described it here for you. Reverse it to exit the turn.
Golden rule......anytime you move your hand left and right .....move your
foot on the same side youre going! :-)
