China Revs Up Its I2R Missile Efforts
By Douglas Barrie, Zhuhai

China is attempting to develop fourth-generation imaging infrared-guided air-to-air and
man-portable surface-to-air missiles, which--if successful--would mark a step change in the
countrys guided-weapons capability.

A prototype imaging-infrared (I 2R) seeker is claimedto be already under test. Development
of the air-to-air missile would give China a route to acquiring a capability more akin to
the AIM-9X, or British Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missile.

China is also active in the guided-weapons export arena, with sales of its present generation
of IR-guided dogfight missiles. Were it to successfully develop an imaging-infrared missile,
this would prove highly attractive to countries that do not have access to such technology
from U.S. or European manufacturers.

I 2R seekers are inherently more difficult to defeat using passive countermeasures such as
flares than single- and multi-waveband infrared seekers.

Developmental work on a scanning array seeker is being carried out by Luoyang Optoelectro
Technology Development Center. Company officials here said an imaging seeker had already been
built and bench tested. While captive-carry flight trials of the prototype seeker have not yet
taken place, the Luoyang officials suggested such tests will occur in the near future. In
looking to acquire an advanced I 2R air-to-air missile to succeed its PL-5, PL-6, PL-8 and PL-9
IR-guided short-range missiles, China is also considering whether to pursue a collaborative
program with foreign missile houses. A number of possible options is being actively explored.
Discussing the requirement for a fourth-generation air-to-air missile, the Luoyang officials
indicated the weapon would have thrust vector control.

However, they added that questions remain regarding future requirements that would affect the
configuration of such a missile. One of the ideas being explored is whether to have purely a
short-range missile, or to move toward a medium-range weapon, one official said.

Missile body dimensions, including the diameter, have also yet to be defined, he added. Given
that Chinas previous air-to-air missile developments were based on U.S., French and Israeli
airframe designs, acquired legitimately or otherwise, foreign developmental input into its
ongoing efforts must remain a clear possibility.

Along with an imaging air-to-air missile effort, Luoyang is also involved in developing a
man-portable I 2R surface-to-air missile system, the QW-4. This program is being led by the
China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp. (Cosic).

AN EFFECTIVE I 2R man-portable surface-to-air missile would provide an even greater capability
against low-altitude targets. Luoyang officials confirmed the company is working on the detector
array for the QW-4, but added the missile was only in development; its not ready yet. Design
criteria for the QW-4 released by Cosic claimed a maximum slant engagement range of 6,000 meters
(19,680 ft.) and a 4,000-meter maximum altitude.

Luoyang is also involved in the Chinese air forces SD-10 (PL-12) active radar-guided medium-
range air-to-air missile program, which is now in the test phase. According to the officials,
the effort has been underway for more than five years. We are developing it ourselves, but
with help, one official said.

Several Russian missile and subsystem developers are supporting the program, with much of
the missile utilizing components from the R-77 (AA-12 Adder). Ground-test firings have already
been carried out, as have captive-carry and safe-clearance trials using a J-8 testbed aircraft.
Discussing the novel reverse sweep on the rear cruciform fins, one of the officials said this
was adopted to increase the missiles maneuverability. The weapon has a claimed maximum lateral
acceleration of 40g. Such a fin design also reduces the actuator power requirement for driving
the all-moving control surface.

The officials also confirmed that the missile would be able to be used with a lofted flight
trajectory profile, to maximize fly-out range. This is unlike the basic R-77 (known for export
as the RVV-AE), which is being bought by the PLAAF for its Su-30MKK aircraft.

During the 4th Zhuhai Airshow, Shannxi Aircraft Industry Corporation (SAC) unveiled its new Y-8X medium transport design which is still on the drawing board. Even though the aircraft was named as a Y-8/An-12 derivative, it appears to be largely a new design, with new fuselage, vertical tailfin, advanced avionics and engines. The aircraft features a new C-130 style forward fuselage which houses a 2-crew glass cockpit with digital electronics such as EFIS, FMS and GPS/INS. Its 4 high efficency 6-blade composite propellers and low fuel consumption turboprop engines give Y-8X a higher cruising speed and a longer range, compared to the old Y-8s. It is still unclear whether the turboprop engine will be a domestic design or imported from a foreign country. However Ukrainian assistance is expected since Antonov OKB has reached an agreement with SAC to help to develop Y-8F600 civilian transport aircraft. Some specifictions: max TO weight 81t, max commercial load 30t, max level speed 660km/h, cruising speed 570km/h, ceiling 11,500m, max range 2,500km (commercial load), max range 6,680km (16t load). For air-drop missions it can carry 132 paratroopers. The overall performance of Y-8X is broadly comparable to C-130J and A400M but still inferior to An-70. The emergence of Y-8X project suggests that China has decided to rely on her own aviation industry and is unlikely to procure any An-70s from Ukraine.
