Taiwan in the Olympics Opening Ceremony

I knew that some of you might have watched the Olympics opening ceremony earlier today. If not, here is the brief report on .

However, the whole description in that report does not mention the way Taiwans team entered the stadium. Since I just watched the event broadcasted by the NBC network in the US. Let me share what the commentator said upon our entering.

As expected, we still had to use 「Chinese Taipei」but not among the stream of the countaries whose names begin with 「C」but as the first one that entered the scene followed by the countaries whose names begin with「T」. The commentator mentioned that we are usually called TAIWAN but under the Mainland Chinas insistence that we had to use the different name.

Also, we did receive a cheerful applause by the audience.

By the way, I am sorry that I cannot type Chinese here and am just trying to share what I have heard with everyone. If someone thinks that it is worth circulating around, you are welcome to translate it into our language. Thank you.

Do not know why, but sorry about the missing link to the report mentioned in my first post:

Re:Taiwan in the Olympics Opening Ceremony

“And now Chinese Taipei.
This is effectively Taiwan of course.
But to keep itself with the world’s political sensitivity in vogue, The ROC calls itself Chinese Taipei.
The team is marching under a ROC proposal and has an Olympic name, an Olympic flag.
No National anthem and so Olympic anthem.
That’s so not to offend the People’s Republic of China just across the water.
The team’s best chance is...Taiquandao, softball for women, and baseball team for men.”

Re:Taiwan in the Olympics Opening Ceremony

Re:Taiwan in the Olympics Opening Ceremony

“We need peace. We need tolerance.

Come for my sorrow(不太記得全名?)

To 二寸魚:

Thanks for your translation. I guess that our reporters probably did not watch the whole event as I did but translated the news from the secondhand sources provided by other media of other countries. That was exactly the reason for me to share what I have heard here.

It is brocasted by the NBC Network in the USA. I got the original comments on tape too. If necessary, I can quote the exact words of the commentator.

This time, the sequence of the entering is in order of Greek, not of English. Regardless, the point is that Taiwan did not come in with the countries, including China, whose names begin with 「C」. Also, although Hong Kong did not enter with China together either, it was introduced as 「Hong Kong, China」.

To me, all these signs are kind of positive.

Formosa

Re:Taiwan in the Olympics Opening Ceremony

台衛兵, you are correct. There is no such a usage like「掌旗官」in English for the flag holder in the Olympics.

Re:Taiwan in the Olympics Opening Ceremony

Just heard the sport news on TV this evening here in the USA:

Negative message: The USA won over us in women softball, 3:0.
Positve message: The news refered to our country as TAIWAN, not as the stupid name, Chinese Taipei.

I think that our media and people in Taiwan should stop calling our team「中華隊」. That is very unseemly.
