唉............ http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/135222_trahant17.html Sunday, August 17, 2003 Taiwanese troublemaker goes from prison to statehouse By MARK TRAHANT Annette Lu tells a story. When Lu Hsiu-lien, or Annette Lu, was a law student at the National Taiwan University, a professor predicted that with so many women studying law, there will be a great revolt under heaven. Ten years later, I began to take part in the womens movement, Lu says. Sixteen years later I became active in the opposition movement, first revolting against the culture and then against the political status quo. It was that great revolt that landed Lu in prison, not heaven. Her crime was a 20-minute speech. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Lu was released in 1985 and she again championed democracy. On March 18, 2000, the people of Taiwan spoke with their ballots and chose Chen Shui-bian and me as the 10th-term president and vice president, she says. I thus became the first popularly elected deputy head of state in the 5,000 years of Chinese culture. The vice president of Taiwan -- or the Republic of China as its called there -- is in Seattle for a few days beginning today. Shes here during a stopover after an official visit to Panama. Under rules set by the United States, Lu is not allowed to grant interviews to the media, but we exchanged emails before she arrived. Although we have seen several women among the national leaders and deputy leaders in Asia, they have all come from powerful and influential families, Lu said. If theyre not someones daughter, theyre someones wife. But I went from prison to the office of the president. I dont mean to brag of my achievements; I just want to tell the story of Taiwans struggles and successes. No matter your political views about Taiwan or China -- it is Lus personal story that remains compelling. She says women in Taiwan are just beginning to enjoy expanded rights, but says far more must be done before those rights reach a satisfactory level. Men started about 99.9 percent of the wars recorded in history, but it has been women who suffered the most, Lu writes. In the last century there were too many wars, primarily as a result of too few women involved in politics. I hope that more women will pursue political careers in this new century and help create a new era of peace for humanity. The progression from prison to statehouse is part of a larger context. Lu says when she first plunged into the womens movement, there were four women in parliament and none in the cabinet. After 30 years of hard work, women now make up a quarter of the cabinet and national legislature, two-fifths of judges, and one-third of the Taipei City Council. Looking at the world overall, and Asia in particular, we should be happy and proud of these achievements. Of course, not everyone is keen on Lu, given the outspoken nature of Taiwans vice president. Even admirers says shes matter-of-fact and will say what she thinks. Her critics go further. The English-edition of mainland Chinas Peoples Daily newspaper calls Lu a trouble-maker and always sets off the words vice president with quotation marks to dismiss the legitimacy of the title. Under the banner of democracy, and human rights, Lu stepped onto international soil to hawk her Taiwan independence philosophy, the Peoples Daily said last year. Lu is in fact an unwanted figure in the international community. Some days its easy to forget that the Northwest is on the Pacific Rim. Most of the international news we get these days is about Iraq, Afghanistan or the Middle East. The stories are immediately real beyond the pages or TV pictures because we see local aircraft, ships or people sent to these far off dangers. But over the next century, much of our discourse -- if not our livelihood -- will be tied to the Pacific Rim. Thats why Lus story matters -- as well as those stories reflecting the contrasting view from mainland China. If the nations of the Pacific region were able to work together and share resources, they could enjoy a beautiful future of reciprocal benefits. It is with this idea in mind that I proposed the concept of a Pacific Democratic Alliance in Asia, says Lu. This alliance will meet in September in Taiwan and will promote democracy and other soft-power ideals. Not a bad notion from a troublemaker. Mark Trahant is editor of the P-I editorial pages. |

Saling also wasnt aware of a dialogue between the Chinese and U.S. governments over the visit. I cant say what would have taken place between China and the U.S. government or Taiwan and the U.S. government, Saling added. Boeing and rival Airbus SAS face dwindling orders as airlines worldwide expect to lose a combined $10 billion this year after the Iraq war and the SARS outbreak. Boeing last month cut its 2004 earnings forecast because it said a demand from airlines may not pick up before 2005. China Airlines spokesman Joseph Wu declined to provide details of the letter or to give the status of the plane order. We feel that it is a very regrettable misunderstanding, Saling said. Rather than a short, private visit to Boeing, we felt the port visit would be a more appropriate and meaningful venue, Boeing spokesman Mark Hooper said in an e-mail. The Port of Seattle visit offered a more robust and public event that includes other businesses in the area associated with Taiwan.
