http://news.yam.com/cna/international/news/200311/200311060104.html 南韓將首次實戰部署射程三百公里導彈 (中央社記者姜遠珍漢城六日專電)南韓計劃於今年十二月開始,實戰部署自美國採購的射程達三百公里的地對地魚叉 (ATACMS Block 1A)導彈。屆時,鴨綠江畔的北韓新義州、江界、城津等大部分地區皆將籠罩在此一導彈的射程之內。 這名高層人士並指出,到明年年底以前,將共引進一百十枚(十多座發射架)這型導彈。 魚叉導彈帶有三百多顆威力相當於手榴彈的子彈,可在瞬間將三至四個足球場大小(400×500公尺)的面積夷為平地。 南韓軍方雖然根據導彈射程限制在一百八十公里以內的「韓美導彈方針」,只配備了可將平壤納入攻擊範圍之內的射程為一百八十公里的南韓國產「玄武」導彈,但由於在二○○一年修改了前述導彈方針,允許配備射程達三百公里的導彈,終於使得南韓獲准採購美國生產的魚叉導彈。 因此,一旦朝鮮半島發生戰爭時,南韓軍可以攻擊北韓後方地區的指揮部、導彈及空軍基地、兵工廠、通訊設施等,戰略打擊能力獲得大幅提高。 美國陸軍戰術導彈系統的魚叉導彈在精確度上,遠遠高於射程為三百至五百公里的北韓飛毛腿導彈及射程為一千三百公里的蘆洞一號導彈,而且在威力方面,也勝過南韓國產「玄武」導彈。魚叉導彈屬最新型導彈,是在一九九七年南韓引進的一百十多枚射程為一百六十五公里的陸軍戰術系統導彈「魚叉一型」的基礎上,進行了全面改良,提高了射程及精確度。除美國外,南韓是第一個引進此型導彈的國家。 |

http://news.yam.com/cna/international/news/200311/200311160051.html 五角大廈稱直昇機墜毀時能見度有限 (中央社記者劉坤原華盛頓十五日專電)美國國防部今晚發布新聞指出,今天在伊拉克北部摩蘇爾西方墜毀的兩架UH-60黑鷹直昇機,一架是載運一個空中快速反應部隊,另一架是載運一批執行運輸任務的官兵。兩架直昇機的飛行員狀況都合格,墜毀時間是當地下午六時三十分,當時能見度有限,飛行員都戴夜視鏡。 新聞稿說,兩架直昇機都隸屬於一○一空降師。飛機墜毀後,一○一師立即派士兵趕赴現場救援,伊拉克警察及消防隊也隨後趕到。目前已知有十七名士兵死亡,五人受傷,一人失蹤。受傷士兵已被送到第二十一戰鬥支援醫院醫治。五角大廈說,墜機原因還在調查中,死亡士兵姓名將在通知其家屬後公佈。 |

Brownlee suggested that cost was no object to get the most effective defensive systems on all helicopters, and in a handwritten postscript he wrote: This is URGENT! Thirty-nine U.S. troops have been killed in five helicopter crashes in Iraq since October 25. Brownlees memo immediately resulted in stepped-up installation of a new anti-missile system on half of the 90 CH-47 Chinook transport helicopters in Iraq that carried an older system, like the one shot down November 2 near Fallujah, killing 16 soldiers.(Full story) The Armys action was prompted, at least in part, by concerns expressed by Democratic Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois in the days after the Chinook crash. The helicopter and its pilot were from the Illinois National Guard. Durbins office said messages had come in after the downing from people suggesting Chinooks -- an older model of helicopter that saw action during the Vietnam War -- had sometimes been sent out without up-to-date, or even functioning, protection. (Full story) The review also includes protective measures on the UH-60 Black Hawk, AH-64 Apache and OH-58 Kiowa helicopters. Black Hawks vulnerable Although mechanical failure has not been ruled out, a military source said initial reports indicated one helicopter ascended to avoid groundfire. This caused a rotor strike with the second helicopter, the source said. (Full story) Almost half of the Army helicopters operating in Iraq -- 290 -- are Black Hawks, which have been the workhorse of the Army fleet since they began replacing the venerable Hueys used during the Vietnam War. With a range of 368 miles, the Black Hawk can fly much farther than the older UH-1 Huey and can carry much heavier loads, along with a full squad of 12 combat-ready troops. And with armor that withstands projectiles up to 23 mm and armor-protective seats for the pilot and co-pilot, the Black Hawk is vastly more survivable than its Vietnam-era predecessor. Yet a single rocket-propelled grenade that hits a critical spot could bring one down. Black Hawks already have all the latest protective systems, and there may be little more the Army can do other than employ standard tactics: Vary routes, fly at night when possible, and stay low to minimize the time an enemy can target them. Chinook defenses The unit, called the ALE-47, also can release a greater quantity of metallic particles known as chaff, designed to confuse radar guidance systems on hostile missiles. The flares on the new system also can be sequenced to pulse in a way that more closely resembles the pulsating heat signature of a helicopter engine, officials said. The older system emits a constant heat trail that infrared-guided missiles could be programmed to ignore. An Army spokesman could not say whether it was working on the downed Chinook. An Army source said all the Illinois National Guard helicopters were outfitted with flare and chaff dispensers, but several of the units were damaged during transport to Iraq. The assemblies, nicknamed flare buckets, are mounted beneath the aircraft. Eventually, units were taken off other departing helicopters and installed on the aircraft from Illinois. A policy change will now keep such aircraft and hardware in place to cover any shortfalls. |

One example is a lightweight armored turret for Humvee vehicles in Iraq. Because of its light weight construction, you cannot put a turret on a Humvee that weighs more than 400 pounds. Armor, even Kevlar fiber armor, can only provide so much protection within the 400 pound limit. But an experimental (meaning very expensive to manufacture) nanotech armor was used to construct a 200 pound armor turret that can stop 12.7mm (.50 caliber) bullets. The fiber uses nanotecholgy (where magnetism or other forces create customized molecules with special properties.) The nanofiber in the Humvee turrets looks like fiberboard, but it is 17 times stronger than Kevlar (which is itself six times stronger than steel). However, its going to be several years before the cost of the new fiber gets anywhere near Kevlars levels (about $50 per square yard of fiber). The experimental turrets are being used to see how the material stands up to field conditions (heat, cold, moisture, vibration and so on.) Most Humvees in Iraq are not getting shot at, much less hit, and the Iraqi gunners are not using any heavy machine-guns (like 12.7mm.) But its easier to test how bullet proof the stuff is on a rifle range, than it is to see what kind of damage day-to-day use in a combat zone will do. |

A month later, they demonstrated the same 20 ton armored chassis with a tank turret, equipped with a 120mm gun (same as used on the M-1). The new system was called Thunderbolt and included an autoloader and an undisclosed number of rounds carried. The armor can only stop 30mm armor piercing shells in the front, and 14.5mm machine-gun bullets on the sides. Expensive composite armor was used to achieve this much protection. In other words, any tank in the world could knock out Thunderbolt with one shot. But the 120mm gun can also destroy any tank out there (except the M-1, from the front). United Defense Industries was quite proud of the fact that it only took them seven months to put all of this together (although a lot of work was shared with the self-propelled artillery project.) The big question is, if Thunderbolt were ordered into production, how long would that take? A demonstration model has not done any of the difficult and time consuming work to insure that the vehicle would stand up to field use. Another potential showstopper is the wear and tear the 120mm gun puts on the lighter (20 ton, versus 60 tons for the M-1) chassis. The stress and vibration problems can require major design changes (either a smaller weapon or a heavier chassis.) Then again, Thunderbolt is taking advantage of the fact that M-1s dont get hit much by large caliber guns in combat. Thunderbolts, being smaller, would probably get hit less. Thunderbolt also uses a novel electrical drive that allows for four hours of silent operation (moving just under electrical power.) This could be useful. But in Iraq, M-1s did get many hits (nearly all ineffective) by RPGs. Moreover, because the 120mm gun is a one shot, one target destroyed kind of weapon, you wouldnt have to fire many rounds in combat, so the smaller ammo capacity of the Thunderbolt would be less of a problem. But to train the crew, you have to fire that 120mm gun a lot. If you cant train the crew, might as well not take the vehicle into combat. Thus it is unclear exactly what Thunderbolt is trying to demonstrate. |
